Laminated Safety Glass: Why Does it Bubble?

Carlos ARAUZ MORENO (OPTIMA, Liphy)

Laminated safety glass (LSG) bonded by polyvinyl butyral (PVB) is a staple of modern life, from the world-famous pyramid in the Louvre Museum to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Yet, despite overshadowing regular monolithic glass in terms of bending, breakage, and impact performance, LSG assemblies suffer from unwanted bubbles that are anathema to the transparent nature of glass itself. In this talk, I will discuss the plurality of physical mechanisms behind the growth of these bubbles which include interfacial nucleation, temperature shifts, mass transport of multiple gases, and a complex time-temperature dependent polymer rheology—all of which combine to determine whether a piece of LSG will bubble or not.

Analysis of Mechanical and Viscoelastic Properties of Polymeric Nanocomposites

Lara NEGRI (PSM, Liphy)

Polymer nanocomposites are hybrid materials containing nanoparticles embedded in a polymeric matrix that allow us to tune macroscopic properties at the nanoscale. In this work, theoretical-computational studies on the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of polymeric nanocomposites of basic and technological interest were carried out, in order to obtain a better understanding of these macroscale properties and to understand their dependence on microscale aspects.
