I will illustrate how highly sensitive absorption spectroscopy can be used to characterize the Earth's atmosphere through two examples: (1) The MicroCarb satellite mission dedicated to the mapping of the CO2 concentration and (2) the water vapor continuum which plays an important role in the radiative transfer modelling.
